Welcome to the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic
In this website, you will find information about the types of cases we take, our criteria for accepting cases, as well as information on how law students can join the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic (the "Clinic") as for-credit students or summer employees.
The Clinic provides legal services to the Ottawa community. Staffed by lawyers and law students, the Clinic provides public legal education, legal advice, and representation at court for a variety of criminal and tenant-related matters. We also assist women who have been victims of violence in obtaining compensation.
The Clinic exists for two purposes:
- first, to provide legal services to the community, including providing legal education, advocacy and law reform for, and on behalf of, people of low income, members of historically disadvantaged groups, and students; and
- second, to provide legal education to law students in the Common Law Section of the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law. Law students working as caseworkers gain practical legal skills and court/tribunal experience while making a contribution to the Ottawa community.
The Clinic serves low income people and students. Our services are provided free of charge and are provided by law students who are supervised by staff lawyers. We provide our services in both French and English. For persons who require the assistance of a language interpreter, the Clinic can arrange for this service to be provided.
Areas of law:
The Clinic provides legal services free of charge to all those who qualify financially and whose cases fall within our mandated areas of service. Undergraduate students of the University of Ottawa and Carleton University automatically qualify financially.
The Clinic offers services in the following areas of law:
- Criminal law;
- Tenant law; and
- Applications at the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board;
As well, the Clinic provides Community Legal Education and Outreach to community groups and organizations regarding various legal topics and issues. If you are a community organization and would like to learn more about our services please see the Community Organizations page.
